Prof. Tomonori Yoshizaki
Vice President for Academic Affairs, National Institute for Defense Studies (NIDS), Japan MoD
Prof. Tomonori (Tom) Yoshizaki has served as vice president for academic affairs of the National Institute for Defence Studies (NIDS) of Japan, since April 2022. In this position he oversees professional military education (PME) and research activities of the institute. Prior to this position, he was director of policy simulation (2015-22) & director of security studies department (2011-15) at NIDS; and an assistant director of Office of Strategic Studies of Japan MoD in 1998-99．Prof. Yoshizaki was a visiting fellow and professor at King’s College London, the Hudson Institute, Japan's Self-Defense Forces Staff Colleges, Tokyo University for Foreign Studies (TUFS), Sophia University, International Christian University (ICU), and National Graduate Research Institute for Policy Studies (GRIPS).
His recent publications are "The Impact of the War in Ukraine on Grey Zone Coercion in the Indo-Pacific," Revue de Defense Nationale (France) Summer 2022; “NATO and the Dilemma of Unity: Crises of Ukraine, Populism, and COVID-1”, Journal of Strategic Studies (Japan), March 2021; “Japan’s Free and Open Indo-Pacific Vision: Strategic Implications for Europe” Le Dossier Diplomatie (France) Autumn 2019; “Competitive Strategy and U.S. Third Offset in the Asia-Pacific,” Revue de Defense Nationale (France), Summer 2018. His areas of expertise include alliance management, European security and NATO, Japan’s Peace Operations, Conflict Resolution, peace building, and civil-military cooperation.
