The Institute for Global Security and Defense Affairs (IGSDA) has strengthened its international presence by signing an expanded academic agreement with the University of Tokyo. The new agreement represents a deeper stage of cooperation, enhancing research collaboration between the Institute and international research and academic institutions.

The Institute signed an expanded academic exchange agreement with the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, represented by the “RCAST Open Laboratory for Emergence Strategies (ROLES)”, with the aim of strengthening cooperation in scientific research and academic activities of mutual interest.

IGSDA began its collaboration with the University of Tokyo in 2018, which culminated in the initial five-year academic cooperation agreement in 2021. Upon the expiration of the first agreement, it was agreed to deepen cooperation with a more comprehensive five-year agreement, renewable for an additional five years.

The new agreement stipulates the implementation of a wide range of joint scientific activities, including the exchange of faculty members and researchers, conducting collaborative research, holding joint lectures and seminars, and exchanging information and academic materials between the two parties. The Institute for Global Security and Defense Affairs (IGSDA) is a leading research institution comprising a select group of international experts in security, defense, geostrategic, political, economic, and social affairs, among others. Established as a think tank in 2016, IGSDA is a prominent research center with extensive experience in international cooperation. It provides research contributions and consulting services to numerous international organizations in the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and the Americas, and maintains cooperation agreements with several relevant international think tanks and academic institutions.

According to the agreement, specific projects related to these activities will be determined through joint consultations between IGSDA and ROLES, ensuring alignment with each party’s priorities. The terms for handling intellectual property rights arising from the collaboration will be agreed upon in separate, pre-established documents, in accordance with each institution’s policies.

The agreement also includes plans to organize key events within the framework of the partnership, including holding joint seminars and workshops annually throughout the agreement’s duration. The agreement was signed on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, by Professor Satoshi Ikuchi, Head of the ROLES Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, and Dr. Sayed Ghoneim, Chairman IGSDA.
